Full Job Description

EXECUTIVE OPPORTUNITY

AN INVITATION TO APPLY FOR THE POSITION OF
SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
BARRE UNIFIED UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT

VERMONT

The Barre Unified Union School Board seeks dynamic and effective leaders as candidates for its Superintendent of Schools position.

The district serves Barre City and Barre Town, incorporated separately and nestled in the heart of Central Vermont in Washington County. Barre City has approximately 8,500 residents and is one of the largest cities in Vermont.  Barre Town is home to four villages (East Barre, Westerville, Graniteville, and South Barre) with a total population of approximately 8,000.

With convenient downtown shopping, a variety of recreational opportunities, a strong school community and diverse housing opportunities, Barre is a great place to live and raise a family. As an integral part of the Barre-Montpelier urban area, Barre residents enjoy all the conveniences of an urban area while living in some of the state’s most beautiful rural environments. Barre has been referred to as the “Granite Center of the World” due to its famous granite quarries and the important role the granite industry played in the history of the region. Barre also has strong cultural roots, holding musical and theatrical performances at the Opera House established in 1899, and is home to the Studio Place Arts, a thriving community visual arts center in the historic downtown area. Taking advantage of its amazing, centralized location, Barre enjoys easy access to the Groton State Forest and Green Mountains. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Millstown Trails offer hiking over a collection of trails spread over 1,500 acres, along with other outdoor seasonal activities. Barre’s proximity to Vermont’s Capital City of Montpelier delivers a big city feel to a small town.

The Barre Unified Union School District comprises four distinct schools: two elementary/middle schools, one high school, and an alternative high school program housed on a different campus:

  • Barre City Elementary and Middle School, Grades PreK-8, student enrollment 709
  • Barre Town Elementary and Middle School, Grades Prek-8, student enrollment 824
  • Spaulding High School, Grades 9-12 and Spaulding Educational Alternative, combined student enrollment approximately 652

The Barre Unified Union School District is focused on providing a high-quality education for all students and carries this focus through the district vision statement: “A rock solid education for a lifetime of discovery.” Proficiency Based Learning (PBL) is at the heart of all academic coursework in the district. Students are offered a wide variety of academic, athletic, and club activities, creating a well-rounded student experience.

  • Pre-K is offered at schools in both Barre City and Barre Town
  • Music, art, technology, health, and physical education programs are offered in Grades K-12, including band/chorus for 6-12 and theatre arts for 7-12
  • Outdoor learning activities include a Mountain Bike club, Crops by Kids and other outdoor activities,  encouraging students to expand their education beyond the traditional classroom
  • Spaulding High School offers a well-rounded curriculum that includes Advanced Placement courses, as well as access to additional learning opportunities through JROTC, Phoenix Program and Flexible Pathways to Graduation programs
  • Spaulding Alternative School provides support and programs designed to offer a variety of pathways to a high school diploma
  • Barre Unified Union School District supports learning with robust athletic offerings for varsity and junior varsity teams for students in Grades 7-12, including soccer, cross country, mountain biking, basketball, rock climbing, indoor track, outdoor track, cheerleading, softball, and baseball
  • The overall student experience is enriched by a wide variety of club activities at all grade levels
