Full Job Description

The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is seeking applications for a non-tenure track Faculty of Civil & Environmental Engineering Practice at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Professor. Part-time Adjuncts will also be considered. CMU aims to attract exceptional candidates at any career stage who have expertise and interests in applying technology-particularly in computational modeling, digital twins, data analytics, and AI-across the broad areas of civil and environmental engineering.

This position is intended for professionals with diverse industry experience and technical expertise who can bring real-world insights to CEE's online certificate programs, which includes our inaugural "Certificate in AI Engineering - Digital Twins & Analytics." The successful candidate will play a key role in connecting academia with industry, helping students prepare for successful careers in CEE within today's interdisciplinary landscape. Depending on the candidate's interests and motivation, the position may be full-time or part-time, and adjunct positions may be considered. For the part-time or adjunct role, responsibilities include implementing pre-developed online courses. The expected workload for the part-time position is approximately 15 hours per week. The full-time position would be responsible for implementing pre-developed online courses, developing new curricula, mentoring students, and teaching other CEE undergraduate and graduate courses, with a focus on sensing and computing. A remote work arrangement may be possible for part-time positions in some cases, but applicants must reside and work from one of the following states: AZ, CA, CO, MD, MA, NJ, NY, OH, PA, TX, VA, or DC.

Candidates should hold an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Civil and/or Environmental Engineering or a related discipline and demonstrate the potential to integrate their professional practice with the CEE's educational, research, and outreach programs. The ideal candidate will have experience leading industry projects that involve the implementation of sensing technologies, data analytics, computing systems, and/or AI. Additionally, they should have experience developing strategies and visions as an industry leader.

CEE at CMU is ranked among the top programs in the nation for both undergraduate and graduate studies according to the latest USNWR rankings. CMU offers a distinctive interdisciplinary education and research program that encompasses activities in sensing, control, information modeling, and visualization of infrastructure and environmental systems.

We are deeply committed to all members of our community-students, faculty, and staff. Our vision is to reimagine civil and environmental engineering through innovative leadership in education and research, integrating systems thinking and new technologies, and empowering a diverse community of socially conscious problem solvers to lead the world to a sustainable, resilient, equitable, and inclusive future. Our mission is to inspire and educate the next generation of engineers and to conduct engineering science and technology research that addresses important societal challenges. We strive to achieve this with the highest dedication to quality, integrity, and respect for others. We are particularly interested in applicants who are committed to and have a passion for fostering a culturally diverse environment in both research and teaching, and who are eager to strengthen the culture of inclusivity at CMU. We are committed to considering a diverse applicant pool in all aspects. CMU also seeks to support dual-career couples and is a member of the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC), which assists with dual-career searches. The mission, goals, current activities, and research center/institute engagements of the Department of CEE are described at www.cmu.edu/cee.

Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled. The start date is expected to be as early as in January 2025, and no later than August, 2025. E-mail inquiries concerning this position may be sent to the Search Committee via CEE-FacultySearch@andrew.cmu.edu.

Please submit your application at https://apply.interfolio.com/156308 including a cover letter detailing your qualifications, statement of teaching philosophy and plans, curriculum vitae, a list of at least three professional references, preference for full-time or part-time employment, and any other relevant supporting documents that you feel is important to share.
