ABOUT THE POSITION

Marin County Detention Health Services provides health care to incarcerated individuals of Marin County within the adult and juvenile jail facilities. Detention Health Services is a health care delivery system that is managed by the County of Marin's Health and Human Services Department's, Division of Public Health. Under direction of the Nursing Services Manager, the Detention Nurse Practitioner (DNP) performs complete medical history and physical exams on incarcerated patients, initiates diagnostic tests, evaluates findings, and prescribes medical treatment plans. In addition, the DNP collaborates with Social Services and Behavioral Health jail staff on comprehensive inmate treatment plans. The DNP provides direct patient assessment and evaluation. They also provide and direct patient care and treatment and oversee the implementation and evaluation of the inmate treatment plans. The DNP provides support and advanced direction of acute and chronic medical needs within the jail facility. 

There is currently one (1) full-time Detention Nurse Practitioner vacancy in the Department of Health and Human Services', Division of Public Health.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
Bilingual skills in Spanish and English are highly desirable.

Bilingual Testing:
Bilingual Testing/Certification: The successful candidate must possess bilingual skills and must demonstrate proficiency in both Spanish and English prior to appointment. A bilingual proficiency exam will be administered to ensure the candidates possess the appropriate skill level to meet the requirements.

Our Highly Qualified Candidate

The ideal candidate has experience working in a high security environment such as, correctional facilities, prisons, or detention health services. The ideal DNP has the ability to manage complex relationships and collaborate as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Our ideal candidate has resiliency to work in a stressful and sometimes chaotic environment, excellent judgment and decision-making skills, and effective written and oral communication skills. The Detention Nurse Practitioner has demonstrated proficiency utilizing an electronic medical record system to document medication delivery and patient treatment information. Bilingual language skills in Spanish and English are highly desirable.

Qualifications 

Knowledge of
  • Advanced nursing principles, practices, methods and techniques.
  • Principles, practices and procedures used in the detection, diagnosis, treatment and documentation of health problems within the area of specialty.
  • Pharmacology relevant to area of specialty, including indications, reactions, interactions and contraindications.
  • Laws, rules, regulations, protocols and requirements pertinent to the practice of nursing and the area of specialty.
  • Safety and infection control practices and procedures.
  • Counseling and interviewing techniques.
  • Environmental, sociological and psychological problems related to medical care within the area of specialty.
  • Community medical and social agencies and resources.
Ability to
  • Exercise sensitivity, good judgment, and cooperation to integrate security needs into daily patient care.
  • Conduct complete physical and/or psychosocial assessments of patients, develop and implement treatment plans and make appropriate referrals.
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures specific to area of assignment.
  • Evaluate findings and results, determine deviations from normal, and prescribe appropriate measures.
  • Apply teaching principles and provide education and counseling.
  • Provide nursing services to dysfunctional, stressed and/or uncooperative clients.
  • Exercise sound independent judgment within scope of authority and practice.
  • Prepare and maintain organized, detailed and accurate medical records.
  • Collaborate with other members of the health care team on an ongoing basis.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the effects of culture and ethnic background on health issues.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Minimum Qualifications

Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner training program that conforms to Board of Registered Nursing standards, including training and/or education in area of subspecialty.

Certificates and Licenses

Possession of a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse and certification as a Nurse Practitioner issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year of appointment, a current Furnishing Number issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing, may be required for some positions.

LiveScan:
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Candidates selected are subject to fingerprinting by the Sheriff's Department and must pass a Department of Justice LiveScan background check prior to appointment.

BACKGROUND PROCESSApplicants successful in testing will be subject to a thorough and rigorous background investigation which may include, but is not limited to, a criminal records check, interviews with friends, relatives, neighbors and employers; verification of DMV records; and overall employment and education history. An applicant may be disqualified for past criminal convictions, poor driving record, providing false background information, and other reasons. 

DRUG USE STANDARDSNo use of illegal drugs within the timelines described in the Pre-Employment Drug Use Guidelines (Download PDF reader). Applicants successful in testing will be given a polygraph examination and/or computerized voice stress analysis and will be asked about illegal drug use.

Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
