The Marin County Free Library (MCFL) is a special taxing district that operates ten branch libraries. in Marin under the authority of the Board of Supervisors. It provides public library services to the residents of the unincorporated areas of the County and the cities of Corte Madera, Fairfax and Novato.

ABOUT THE POSITION

With minimal supervision, the ESL Instructor plans and teaches noncredit English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults in the community who want to improve their English to work toward their educational and career goals, succeed on the job, and participate as active members of their community. Classes are offered online, and in person in West Marin, (Point Reyes and Bolinas), and South Novato.  
 
Typical duties for this position include:

  • Preparing and grades all class assignments and examinations.
  • Advising, assists, and evaluates students and evaluates learning outcomes.
  • Participating in program activities, including curriculum and program planning, development, evaluation, and decision making, as well as the development of new teaching-learning methods and materials.
Schedule/Hours
The position in South Novato is Tuesday and Wednesday, 5:00 PM- 7:00 PM. 
The positions in West Marin are Wednesdays online and Thursdays in-person, 5:00 PM-7:00 PM.

ABOUT YOU

The ideal candidate feels comfortable with course and curriculum development. They have experience creating lesson plans for adult learners, goal setting and tracking program outcomes. The ideal candidate is familiar with teaching, learning theory, community outreach and equity work, and has confidence teaching in person in rural communities and on zoom to an online community. The ideal candidate utilizes multi-sensory methods and cultural competency in their teaching to engage differences in learning styles and abilities.
 
Ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable.
 
Minimum Qualifications: Equivalent to two years of experience teaching English as a Second Language. Completion of a TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) Certificate program, or completion of 30 semester units in a closely related subject may be substituted for the experience to a maximum of one year.

Special Requirements: The successful candidate will be required to successfully complete a background investigation.

Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
