Full Job Description

Job Summary

Under general direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, performs day-to-day maintenance, preparation and inspection of assigned parks and grounds fields, facilities, and amenities. Prepares athletic fields and playing courts for practices, games and tournaments. Carries out a year-round sports maintenance program for athletic fields, tennis/pickleball and basketball courts. Conducts the installation, repair, and inspection of athletic fields. Utilizes heavy equipment (e.g., dump trucks, tractors, backhoes, excavators, etc.) in the performance of job duties. Assists with various special projects and events as needed including the setup, tear down, and cleanup of permitted special events outside of regular work hours. Works during inclement weather conditions (e.g., snow/ice, heavy rain/flooding, etc.) to clear and maintains roads and walkways. Assists other divisions/departments with general installation, maintenance, and cleaning projects as assigned. Subject to on-call availability and overtime.

  • Maintain Athletic Fields, Park Equipment, & Amenities: Perform daily grooming and maintenance of athletic fields, including mowing, aerifying, topdressing, sodding, trimming, field painting, irrigation, and turf care. Perform setup and layout of athletic fields, tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts. Assess needs of athletic fields pertaining to drainage, low areas, etc. Apply fertilizer, herbicide, and other related chemicals as needed. Power wash, brush, clean and clear all court surfaces for play as needed. Assist with drying and maintaining of fields following rain, including removing standing water, raking, and adding drying amendments as needed for playability. Conduct detailed athletic field inspections and audits as well as inspect various existing park equipment and amenities (e.g., goals, backstops, sideline fences, trash/recycling receptacles, etc.) to ensure all park areas are safe for use by the public. Perform preventative maintenance and repairs as necessary for athletic equipment, irrigation systems and other park amenities. Operate small and large equipment as well as hand tools in performance of job duties. Assess and verify measurements of bases and pitching mound criteria each day prior to play. Assess fencing requirements and conditions and coordinate repairs as needed with staff or contractors. Assist in coordinating and overseeing the installation of new and replacement park equipment and amenities as needed.

  • Assist with Special Projects & Events: Assist in various construction, installation, and special event projects. Prepare construction sites by digging holes; placing and leveling poles, fencing, and railing; decking, shade sails, mixing, setting, and pouring concrete. Load materials and equipment including operating a heavy dump truck (CDL-required) to haul building materials. Assemble and install signage, benches, batter boxes, bleachers, netting, wind screens, and athletic field equipment. Assist with the set-up, tear down, and cleanup of permitted special events outside of regular work hours. Help direct traffic as necessary. As needed, assist with various City related projects, including installing and removing temporary structures, litter picking, restroom locking and unlocking, plus restocking.

  • Ensure Safety & Maintain Equipment: Proactively identify, remove, and/or report potential safety hazards, conditions, or items. Perform routine and preventative maintenance and service of equipment and hand tools by removing dirt, washing and greasing parts, checking oil, changing oil filters, changing blades, and fueling. Assist with scheduled inspections of safety and emergency equipment and document condition.

  • Support Inclement Weather Operations: Work outside of regular schedule, to provide assistance to internal and external stakeholder throughout inclement weather conditions (e.g., snow/ice, heavy rain/flooding, etc.). Clear and maintain walkways and public access areas by removing trees, limbs, and various debris. Operate sanders, loaders, snowplows, and other specific equipment necessary to clear and maintain roads and walkways.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or any equivalent.
  • Over two (2) years of experience in parks and/or athletic field maintenance, construction, landscape/grounds maintenance, or related field.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency operating heavy equipment (e.g., dump truck, backhoe, stump grinder, skid loader, front end loader, tractor, track hoe, etc.)
  • Must have or obtain South Carolina Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicators Category 3 (Ornamental and Turf Pest Control) License within six (6) months of hire.


Driver's License Requirements

  • Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) within three (3) weeks of hire, or the equivalent CLP from their state of residence.
  • Valid South Carolina Class B CDL within three (3) months of hire, or the equivalent CDL from their state of residence.
  • Please be advised: Applicants who do not intend to relocate to South Carolina, must reside in a neighboring State (Georgia or North Carolina) and must meet the same CDL requirements as residents of South Carolina. In addition, employees residing in a neighboring state are required to provide to the City of Greenville an annual Motor Vehicle Record from their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles at the sole cost of the employee.


Performance Requirements

Knowledge of:

  • Athletic field maintenance standards including re-sodding, re-grading, aerating, and topdressing procedures, techniques, and standards.
  • Athletic field painting and turf preparation methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Athletic regulations and standards regarding the setup and marking of athletic fields and playing courts for games and tournaments.
  • Safe equipment operating practices/procedures.
  • Plant material and weed identification.
  • SCDOT Work Zone Safety guidelines.
  • Related OSHA regulations and general PPE requirements.

Ability to:

  • Read instructions, labels, Safety Data Sheet (SDS), manuals, policies, and other reference materials.
  • Set up, calibrate, and operate a wide range of standard and specialized athletic field construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Install, calibrate, operate, and maintain athletic field irrigation systems and equipment.
  • Appropriately mix, measure, and apply pesticides and herbicides by calculating fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on lawn mowers, weed eaters, and other small equipment.
  • Use a smart tablet and/or computer to write reports, inspection notes, and enter maintenance information into work management system.
  • Make mathematical calculations and draw logical conclusions; work with fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurements.
  • Operate various types of mowers (e.g., push, side mount, embankment, front mount, zero turn, reel, tractor and tractor mounted mowers), commercial landscape maintenance equipment (e.g., blower, backpack sprayer, power washer, water wagon, stump grinder, chain saw, pole saw, tiller, etc.), utility vehicle, generators, as well as hand and power tools.
  • Proficiently operate heavy equipment (e.g., dump truck, backhoe, excavator, skid loader, front end loader, tractor, track hoe, etc.)
  • Use a portable radio, phone, or other communication devices.
  • Drive City vehicles between facilities and job sites.


Working Conditions

Primary Work Location: Parks and grounds sites.

Protective Equipment Required: Safety glasses, ear protection, steel-toed shoes, protective gloves, safety vest, hard hat, etc.

Environmental/Health and Safety Factors:

Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside and/or with exposure to risk. Daily exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, and noise and vibration. Weekly exposure to respiratory and chemical hazards (e.g., gas fumes, pesticide chemicals, dust and dirt, etc.); and mechanical or physical hazards (e.g., high voltage power lines, dangerous machinery, falling tree branches, etc.). Monthly exposure to electrical hazards (e.g., ballfield lighting, irrigation system sensors/timers, etc.); and communicable diseases.

Physical Demands:

Constantly require hearing, vision, talking, carrying, handling, standing, and foot controls. Frequently requires fine dexterity, lifting, pushing/pulling, reaching, twisting, bending, climbing, crouching/stooping, balancing, and walking. Heavy strength demands exerting up to 20 pounds constantly, 20-50 pounds frequently, and may require exerting up to 100 pounds on rare occasions.

Mental Demands:

Constantly requires frequent change of tasks, working in noisy/distracting environments, and working closely with others as a part of a team. Frequently requires performing under time pressures. Occasionally requires performing multiple tasks simultaneously, tedious/exacting work, and irregular schedule/overtime.
